Simple Do-It-Yourself Steps for Arriving Safely at Summer Driving Destinations

By Kirsten Berry

Fireworks, family picnics and fun are three hallmarks of Summer. And just as people need to practice safety in their outdoor activities, it is important to have vehicles in good working order for better fuel efficiency and a safe drive when setting out to visit friends and family this summer.

The American Automobile Association’s (AAA) recent annual survey estimates more than 7.5 million vehicle breakdowns will occur over the summer months. In order to help drivers better prepare for the Fourth of July and other road trips, Firestone Complete Auto Care has compiled a few easy tips to help travelers make it safely to their chosen destinations.

  • Get an inspection – An annual complete vehicle inspection, including the air-conditioning system, may help drivers avoid costly repairs and keep cool on hot summer days. A technician can ensure a vehicle’s engine, battery, exhaust system and cooling system are all in good working order.
  • Check fluids - Look at fluid levels and fill if necessary, including engine oil and coolant, brake, transmission, washer, power steering fluids. And don’t forget to check the gas!
  • Do not overload the vehicle - Just as lighter loads increase fuel efficiency, overloading creates excessive heat inside your tires and can cause tire failure.
  • Check tire pressure - Properly inflate all four tires, plus the spare, to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended levels. Tires can lose up to one pound per square inch (psi) per month under normal conditions. Use an accurate tire gauge to check tire air pressure monthly and always when the car is cool – meaning the car has been driven less than one mile or has not moved in at least three hours.
  • Check tire tread - Here’s an easy test: place a U.S. penny into a tread groove on several spots on the tire with Lincoln’s head facing down. If the top of Lincoln’s head (or 2/32”) is visible in any spot, the tire is below the minimum tread depth and should be replaced. Remember, this simple test is only appropriate for tires on passenger vehicles.
  • Pack an emergency kit to prepare for any unexpected breakdowns - An auto club membership may also be helpful just in case of an emergency.
