2006 Chicago Auto Show Overview

Reported by Lou Ann Hammond

Toyota Tundra

2007 Toyota Tundra
This has to go first because it is the most talked about vehicle of the show. They're building bigger trucks in Texas and more of them. Most of the world introductions at the Chicago Auto Show will include trucks. The Tundra was first introduced in 1999 as a 2000 model. Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A.,Inc. unveiled the world premiere of the all-new 2nd generation 2007 Tundra full-size pickup truck at the 2006 Chicago Auto Show.

The completely redesigned 2007 Tundra will be bigger, more powerful and will offer new body and engine configurations. The engine will be a 5.7-liter i-Force V-8 and will come in three trim levels; base, SR5 and Limited. The Tundra can tow over 10,000 pounds and you won't need an extra hand when hooking up the tow-hook. Toyota has an optional wide-screen backup camera.

"From bumper-to-bumper, under the hood and from the inside out the new Tundra is a true American truck that will set a new benchmark in the full-size truck segment," said Jim Lentz, TMS group vice president and general manager. "It will be aimed at the ‘True Trucker,' the true opinion leaders among full-size owners. True Truckers are highly credible because they use, punish, and demand the most out of the pickups they buy."

Buyers of the new Tundra will have a choice of three engines. In addition to the new 5.7-liter V8, the capable 4.0-liter V6 and the legendary 4.7-liter i-Force V8, both also built in Alabama, will be available. The new Tundra will come in three cab configurations. It will retain its three-grade strategy with the Base, SR5 and well-appointed Limited trim levels. In all, Tundra will be offered in more than 30 different models, nearly double the current generation.

DIMENSIONS (inches); Overall length: 228.7,Overall width: 79.9, Overall height: 76.4,Wheelbase: 145.7,TRUCK BED DIMENSIONS (inches):Bed length 78.7,Bed width (at wheel wells) 65.0, Bed width (between wheel wells): 50.0, Bed width (wall-to-wall): 65.0,Bed depth: 22.3

This all-new Tundra will be built in America at both Toyota Motor Manufacturing in Indiana and the new San Antonio,Texas plants. The Tundra is expected to take sales away from the Ford F150, General Motors Chevy Silverado and the Nissan Titan.

Is there any segment Toyota doesn't have a competitor for? How about the Ford Ranger?

2007 Lexus ES 350

2007 Lexus ES 350
In 1989 Lexus brought out the LS 400 flagship. I have bought two, a 1991 and a 1993 since, so I always watch with interest when Lexus brings out a newly designed luxury vehicle. The fully redesigned ES marks the fourth Lexus sedan to benefit from the L-finesse design language. The fifth-generation ES is a front-wheel drive, 3.5-liter V-6 that gets 272 horsepower and 245 lb.-ft of torque.

Dual-zone automatic climate control and 10-way power front seats, with available memory, highlight the front cabin. For the first time, Lexus offers an optional panorama glass roof on the ES 350. The glass roof extends over the entire passenger cabin providing a fixed skylight for rear passengers and a sliding sunroof for front passengers. A manual interior shade is provided for the front and rear passenger compartments.

An enhanced standard premium audio system brings an in-dash, six-disc CD-changer, MP3 player, iPod connectivity and an additional speaker to the 2007 ES. The system also includes an Automatic Sound Levelizer (ASL) to maintain consistent sound levels at varying vehicle speeds.

The Lexus ES 350 will go on sale at the end of April, 2006 as a 2007 model starting around $32,000, representing the best value in the entry luxury segment. With the help of valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) the new ES 350 gets 21/30 mpg and gets 0-60 in 6.8 seconds all with an expected Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle II (ULEV II) certification..

2007 Chevrolet Avalanche
General Motors introduced the all-new 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche, an OnStar technology enhancement and an initiative that builds on GM's "Live Green Go Yellow" campaign that was launched in Washington, D.C. last week.

The 2007 model is based on GM's brand-new, full-size SUV platform, which features more power with improved, segment-leading fuel economy and flex-fuel capability on some models; a sharper, more precise driving feel; increased interior refinement and improved quietness; and world-class safety. It will go on sale in the second quarter of 2006 as a 2007 model.

And talk about flex-fuel vehicles; By the end of this year General Motors will have almost 2 million flex-fuel vehicles on the road, comprised of nine different vehicles. Brent Dewar, GMNA Vice President of Marketing and Advertising, used to work in Brazil where flex-fuel was a huge revenue stream for the farmers and the country.
