Clay Dean is Design Director, Small Truck and HUMMER. His most recent project is the 2003 Chevrolet Cheyenne concept pickup truck.
In his current position, Dean is responsible for directing all design activities on GM's portfolio of small body-on-frame trucks for GMC and Chevrolet, and products for the newly acquired HUMMER brand. In this capacity, he interacts with marketing, portfolio planning, advanced vehicle development and vehicle platform engineering.
Dean began his career at General Motors in 1988, as an associate creative designer. During his 15-year career he has had opportunities with GM Design's Advanced Concept Center in California, Adam Opel AG in Ruesselsheim, Germany, and GM's North American Design Center in Warren, Mich.
His work experience has been focused on the Cheverolet and Truck groups where he was part of the creative teams that produced the 1993 Camero, C5 Corvette, SS Imapala, GMC Envoy and Chevrolet Avalanche. Additionally, he is the Chief Designer of the HUMMER H2 concept vehicle, which was brought to market as a production vehicle in 2002.
A California native, Dean has had a passion for automobiles his entire life. His father nurtured that interest through hobbies, car collecting and motorsports. Throughout high school, Dean participated in car-crazy California culture through car clubs and crewing for southern California drag racing teams.
Dean is a 1988 graduate of Brigham Young University, earning a bachelor's degree in Industrial/Transportation Design.
Dean was born July 18, 1961, and currently resides in Rochester, Mich. He is married to Tonya and is father to five children.
