Wayne Cherry, General Motors Vice President Design
Wayne K. Cherry was appointed vice president, Design for General Motors on November 1, 1992, becoming only the fifth person to head GM Design in its 75-year history. In February 2002, he became a member of the General Motors North American Strategy Board. In this position, Cherry is responsible for the overall design direction of GM's eight North American brands - Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chevrolet Truck, GMC, HUMMER, Pontiac and Saturn as well as the up-front design process..
Cherry joined General Motors in 1962 as Associate Creative Designer. In September 1965, he moved to Vauxhall Motors Ltd., in Luton, England. Following several managerial positions, he was appointed assistant director of design for Vauxhall in March 1971. In June of 1975, Cherry was appointed director of design for Vauxhall/Bedford with overall design responsibility for passenger car and commercial vehicle lines.By June of 1983 he was director of design for Adam Opel. AG in Ruesselsheim, Germany. In this position he was responsible for the design of all GM passenger cars in Europe. Cherry returned to the U.S. in September 1991 as executive designer for Chevrolet, Geo and GM of Canada.
Cherry holds a bachelor's of science in Transportation Design from Los Angeles Art Center College of Design.
