Honda Accord sedan upgrades in style, content, Honda Sensing

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Flashing a bold new grille on the prow of a streamlined body, Honda's redesigned Accord Touring Sedan glides smoothly through compound chicanes on Beach Drive, which winds through the leafy canyon of Rock Creek Park in the heart of Washington, D.C.

Actually, the enhanced Honda best-seller romps through the park, its forceful 6-pack engine lighting a fire on the all-season tires ringing shiny 19-inch alloys.

Accord Touring Sedan represents the pinnacle edition of Accord's 2016 models and its lengthy list of standard equipment includes Honda Sensing, a package of electronic driver assistance programs such as Collision Mitigation Braking System, Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Keeping Assist System, Road Departure Mitigation and Adaptive Cruise Control.

Honda trims the 2016 Accord six different ways.

Accord LX is the entry edition packing a 4-cylinder engine with standard 6-speed manual shifter or optional CVT (continuously variable transmission). Standard content includes 16-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, Honda's active noise cancellation equipment, a rearview camera, 8-inch touchscreen, cloth upholstery and a folding rear seatback.

Accord Sport scores a power boost for the 4-cylinder engine and comes with 19-inch alloy wheels, LED foglamps, twin exhaust pipes and a tail spoiler, 10-way power for driver's seat and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with shift paddles for the CVT.

Accord EX features 17-inch alloy wheels and fancy features like a power moonroof, keyless entry/pushbutton start and heated side mirrors with signal repeaters.

Accord EX-L upgrades to leather binding seats and steering wheel, plus a driver memory system, heated front seats, auto-dimming inside mirror, LED taillamps, a multi-angle rearview camera and 7-speaker 360-watt audio kit.

Accord EX-L V6 packs the V6 engine linking to a 6-speed automatic transaxle with sport mode, plus LED daytime running lights, dual pipes and more.

Aboard the 2016 Accord are front-wheel-drive (FWD) powertrains in 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder formats, plus precise mechanical systems which produce keen ride and handling traits, and a carload of safety equipment.

Accord's base engine for LX, EX and EX-L is a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder plant with direct injection and Honda's twin-cam i-VTEC (intelligent variable value timing and lift electronic control) valvetrain system. It generates 185 hp at 6400 rpm and torque of 181 lb-ft at 3900 rpm.

Accord Sport uses the 2.4-liter 4-in-line engine but modifications make more power and torque. The numbers tally to 189 hp at 6400 rpm with torque of 182 lb-ft at 3900 rpm.

For Accord EX-L V6 and Accord Touring, a high-tech 3.5-liter V6 engine also uses Honda's dual-cam i-VTEC valvetrain system. The V6 generates high muscle numbers -- 278 hp at 6200 rpm plus 252 lb-ft of torque at 4900 rpm.

Federal EPA fuel consumption numbers on Accord's engines seem favorable -- up to 37 miles per gallon for highway travel for the 4-cylinder plant with a CVT and 34 mpg for the V6 tied to the 6-speed automatic.

Honda has upgraded all 2016 Accord models with revised body styling, reinforced unibody and chassis, expanded use of LED exterior lighting, plus new premium features and technologies added including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The new exterior styling reflects subtle lines and subdued paint colors in the manner of a sophisticated -- and expensive -- vehicle, as stylists point the Accord upscale toward a prestigious breed. The new chrome-coated front grille supports dual horizontal bars stacking above a thick front bumper housing the center intake valence and honeycomb mesh insert. A sharply creased and contoured aluminum hood leads to the raked windshield and arching roofline.

Accord's 5-seat cabin layout consists of a pair of form-fitting bucket seats up front with generous lateral support and a broad bench for three adults in back with extra padding on the center seat section. The rear bench seatback folds down to expand the trunk's cargo room.

Cabin enhancements for the 2016 Accord include new glossy piano black interior trim for LX, a new meter design and new carbon fiber-style dashboard trim plus new cloth seat fabric with leatherette bolsters for Sport, and new wood grain-style dashboard trim and tricot seat fabric for Accord Sedan EX.
