San Francisco, CA to Santa Cruz, CA - Over a dozen years ago a small skunk works brand, known as Genesis, was created to work in conjunction with Toyota to capture the youth of the day. The young shoot grafted from the noble company was renamed Scion and is still a scrappy brand geared to the younger generation.
Sedans are losing market share to the functional, fuel efficient hatchbacks that are taking hold in the United States. The 2016 Scion iM is based on the sporty, versatile and functional 5-door Toyota Auris European hatchback with highlights on the exterior design with similarities from the FR-S sports car. Scion says the iM could stand for individual. Intriguing. Easy on the customer's income. For the M, think modern, multi-faceted and magnetic.
Scion provides as standard a 60/40 fold-down rear seats, heated folding mirrors, and standard cargo cover. A roomy console box is augmented by lots of front door pockets, 8 cup holders, rearview backup camera, STAR safety system, and storage bins throughout the hatchback.
The 1.8-liter DOHC Valvematic engine can extract 137 horsepower and mated to a 6-speed stick shift or CVTi-S. The EPA fuel economy numbers are 28 city/37 hwy/31 combined for the 6-speed stick shift, and 28 city/37 hwy/32 combined for the CVTi-S. This CVT has both a Sport Mode as well as manual shifting capability with seven stepped shift points. The only other Sport CVT in a Toyota is the Toyota Corolla.
Scion has created Pure Process Plus, a process that allows customers to research a car through Scion.com, find a dealership, apply for credit and secure a price, all without leaving the couch. Some car dealers will deliver the purchased vehicle straight to your home. Why? To spend less time doing something most people hate, haggling. Scion said on average it takes four hours to buy a car. With Scion it takes two hours and the goal is to get that down to one hour. Scion will be identifying the participating dealers, but they expect a large number of the thousand dealers nationally to participate.
The 2016 Scion iM has a starting MSRP of $18,460 for the 6-speed stick shift and $19,200 for the CVTi-S (automatic). Add $795 for destination and handling. You can purchase the iM in these exterior colors, Blizzard Pearl, Classic Silver Metallic, Black Sand Pearl, Barcelona Red Metallic, Spring Green Metallic and Electric Storm Blue.
