Upgrades and enhancements apply to the 2017 MDX, elegant 7-passenger crossover utility vehicle by Acura, the up-shoot line of performance and luxury vehicles derived from Honda of Japan.
Following the third generation redesign for the 2014 MDX, Acura's mid-size 3-row CUV for 2017 scores refreshed exterior styling including a bold new diamond pentagon grille up front and more standard luxury and technology features aboard such as an electric parking brake, auto high beam headlights, four 2.5-amp USB charging ports and the AcuraWatch suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies.
The 2017 MDX was designed and developed in North America and comes together at Acura's Alabama assembly plant using domestic and globally sourced parts. Beginning early in 2017, the MDX production will also be conducted at Acura's Ohio factory.
All MDX 2017 models offer a choice of FWD (front-wheel-drive) traction or AWD (all-wheel-drive) through the spry wheel control of Acura's SH-AWD (Super-Handling All-Wheel-Drive) equipment with a twin-clutch rear differential and dynamic torque vectoring capability.
Power for MDX stems from Acura's aluminum 3.5-liter V6 with single overhead camshaft, direct injection, drive-by-wire throttle, cross-flow magnesium intake manifold and i-VTEC (intelligent variable value timing and lift electronic control) valvetrain technology.
The V6 generates 290 hp at 6200 rpm and 267 lb-ft of torque at 4500 rpm.
This engine also employs Acura's VCM (variable cylinder management) device to conserve on fuel by modifying the number of engine cylinders at work. As a result the plant also earns good fuel-burn scores with EPA mileage estimates rising to 20/27 mpg (city/highway) for the standard FWD MDX or 19/26 mpg (city/highway) with SH-AWD traction.
All versions stock an advanced 9-speed automatic transmission with pushbutton electronic gear selector.
The monocoque structure of MDX is like a car's platform melding chassis and body into a cohesive entity that's extremely rigid. Then isolate the independent suspension system on sub-frames, add electric power motion adaptive rack and pinion steering and disc brakes for all corners with anti-lock brake system and vehicle stability assist with traction control.
Also standard, the IDS (Integrated Dynamics System) allows a driver to choose a suspension mode (Comfort, Normal, Sport) to suit mood and driving conditions.
Besides the new pentagon grille, revised body styling for the 2017 MDX includes sculpted front fenders, restyled Jewel Eye headlamps, new LED foglamps, chrome rocker panels on flanks and a new rear bumper treatment with sporty revamped dual exhaust pipes.
The driver-oriented cockpit of MDX features a leather-wrapped steering wheel, instrument cluster with LED backlit gauges and an 8-inch touchscreen Multi-Information Display.
Two bucket seats covered in leather occupy the front row of the cabin on either side of a floor console. A leather bench split 60/40 goes to the second row and slides fore and aft for comfort adjustments or power-slides forward with the touch of a button for easy access to third-row seats that split 50/50 and fold. Row 2 seats drop forward and Row 3 seatbacks fold into the floor for a quick disappearing act to make room for more cargo. With all second and third seatbacks down, MDX offers 68.4 cubic feet of flat-floored storage space.
MDX offers Technology and Advance packages which add new features like Bi-Directional Keyless Remote Engine Start, power folding side mirrors and new 20-inch wheel and tire kits. Further, the Advance grade gains LED foglights, Olive Ash Burl or Black Limba wood interior trim, a heated steering wheel and Surround-View Camera System.
MDX Advance models may be outfitted with two captain's chairs separated by a center console on Row 2 in place of the 3-seat split bench.
The AcuraWatch package now standard for all 2017 MDX models includes Adaptive Cruise Control, Collision Mitigation Braking System with automatic emergency braking, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist System, Road Departure Mitigation, Blind Spot Information and Rear Cross Traffic Monitor.
Acura's 2017 MDX/FWD lists for $43,950, or up to $56,400 with the line-capping Advance and Entertainment packages. The 2017 MDX/SH-AWD tallies to $45,950 and tops at $58,400.
