Cadillac CT6 extravagant luxury sedan marks a new flagship

2017, Cadillac, CT6

Stretching extravagantly long and sculpted with knife-sharp creases and dazzling signature LED light blades up-front, the 2017 CT6 large-scale luxury sedan marks Cadillac's new flagship as trimmed in four grades: Base, Luxury, Premium Luxury and uber-luxe Platinum.

This latest Caddy rides on the new Omega rear-wheel-drive architecture, which combines aluminum and steel to forge a lightweight yet extremely stiff structure.

The new platform -- essentially a stretched version of Cadillac's CTS mid-size sedan architecture -- has a wheelbase extending for 7.8 inches longer to 122.4 inches and the overall length increasing by 8.6 inches to 204.1 inches. These spatial expansions create a vast 2+3-seat passenger compartment, now measuring to 121 cubic feet with front-seat legroom of 46.4 inches and rear-seat legroom at 40.4 inches.

And in the cushy 5-seat cabin, the driver and companions strap into leather-clad luxury with cut-and-sewn panels, trimmings in optional carbon fiber and aluminum or wood, plus assistance from an arsenal of electronic driver-assist gizmos and safety apparatus.

Exterior styling for the 2017 CT6 sedans features bold and crisp lines with unique forms marked by angular shapes and keen sheet metal panel creases. The aggressive face houses a prominent horizontal louver panel in the modern interpretation of the Cadillac classic egg-crate grille and piercing optics from signature lighting elements. New vertical LED light blades frame the front corners of the vehicle, with forward illumination from Advanced Indirect Fire LED headlamps.

Flanks seem almost sheer below edgy shoulders, but fenders flare around large wheel wells.

The roofline remains low, canting in front in line with the windshield and canting in back in opposing lines with blacked-out center pillars to simulate a stretched trapezoidal streak of tinted window glass.

Cadillac constructs the 2017 CT6 with standard RWD (rear-wheel-drive) or on-demand AWD (all-wheel-drive).

The CT6 has three powertrain choices, each with DOHC (dual overhead cams), DI (direct injection) and CVVT (continuously variable valve timing). All orient to standard RWD (rear-wheel-drive) but electronically controlled AWD (all-wheel-drive) traction is available with two V6 powertrains.

Standard plant for CT6 Base/RWD and CT6 Luxury/RWD is a cast aluminum 2.0-liter 4-pack with a turbocharger. It runs up to 265 hp at 5500 rpm with 295 lb-ft of torque between 3000 and 4000 rpm.

All trim grades with RWD or AWD list an aluminum 3.6-liter V6 rigged with Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation and Cadillac's stop/start technology that automatically stops and starts the engine when the vehicle is at rest in traffic stops. The naturally aspirated V6 generates 335 hp at 6800 rpm, with SAE net torque peaking to 284 lb-ft at 5300 rpm.

CT6 top grades (Luxury, Premium Luxury, and Platinum) with AWD offer a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 that nets 301 hp at 5700 rpm with torque of 400 lb-ft at 5100 rpm.

Add Cadillac's new 8-speed paddle-shift electronic automatic and CT6 earns EPA fuel economy scores of 22/31 mpg city/highway in the 2.0-liter turbo engine, 18/27 mpg city/highway with the 3.6-liter V6 or 18/26 mpg city/highway with the 3.0-liter twin-turbo and AWD equipment.

The optional advanced on-demand dual-clutch AWD system continuously and automatically manages torque distribution to all wheels to provide consistent traction through various pavement conditions -- wet, dry or icy.

Cadillac also offers the optional Active Chassis Package which includes Magnetic Ride Control, 20-inch wheels, AWD traction and active rear steering.

Cadillac's Rear Camera Mirror system installs an LCD video display in place of the inside rearview mirror. CT6 also brings 4G wireless connectivity with a standard integrated Wi-Fi hotspot and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

For CT6 Platinum a deluxe rear seat package creates 3.3 inches of adjustable seat travel, plus tilting cushions, massage action, heating/cooling and media controls. And the optional Bose Panaray audio system features 34 speakers. Cadillac prices the 2017 CT6 2.0T/FWD Base at $53,795, while the CT6/3.0T/AWD Platinum caps the series at $87,795.
