CHELSEA, Mich. -- All it takes is a quick right-handed crank on the ignition switch of Chrysler's new high-performance sports sedan, the souped-up 300C SRT8, and that deep-throat bleat spewing from twin back pipes speaks to you with the promise of race-car speeds and crisp fun-through-curves maneuvers.

For a large-scale car that tips scales to more than two tons, the 300C SRT8 is impressively fast.Clocked speed runs at the vehicle test facility of DaimlerChrysler in Chelsea, Mich., reveal that it romps from zero to 60 mph in a time well below six seconds, then passes the quarter-mile post in 13 seconds plus change.

This is a big car of bold dimensions with an audacious face, upright structure and chiseled-block body. And it contains a substantial powertrain through a high-powered rendition of Chrysler's fabled HEMI plant with hemispheric combustion chambers.

Special exterior modifications apply, such as a revamped front fascia scored with brake-cooling ducts and an oversized air dam or the rear decklid spoiler. Also, there are special bumper inserts front and rear, unique egg-crate grille with chrome collar, and mirrors plus door handles painted in the body color. Two exterior colors mark the 300C SRT8 in Bright Silver or Brilliant Black.
