Here comes Chevrolet's 2018 Tahoe RST Performance, a street-legal Rally Sport Truck special package applied to the best-selling Tahoe full-size SUV and packing a powerful 6.2-liter V8 engine tied to a Hydra-Matic 10-speed automatic transmission with optional Borla performance exhaust and Brembo high-performance brake kit plus massive 22-inch twin-spoke alloy wheels wrapped by Bridgestone 285/45 rubber.
The Tahoe RST is hard to miss -- its bold body treatment pops out on the pavement.
Virtually all exterior chrome vanishes in favor of body-color door handles and grille surround plus contrasted gloss-black finish for roof rails, mirror caps, window trim rings, grille and Chevy bow-tie badges.
Only four paint shades work White, Black, Silver Ice, and Tungsten.
Tahoe's exterior design appears aerodynamic with smooth lines and, due to aluminum applications for body and engine parts as well as the aluminum hood and liftgate panels, the SUV's weight is pared, which translates to less fuel consumption.
Tahoe's architecture starts with fully boxed frame rails stretching the length of the vehicle for a rock-solid and rigid foundation using high-strength steel and hydroforming to provide more strength plus rigidity with less weight. The cab structure integrates high-strength steel in both A and B pillars as well as roof rails and rocker panels, while ultra-high-strength steel segments show up in rocker panels to add protection for offset collisions.
Tahoe employs lightweight aluminum for some suspension components to boost rigidity and pare pounds.
Brakes install a disc at every wheel with a ventilated front and rear -- with Duralife brake rotors and linkage to a 4-wheel anti-lock brake system with electronic traction and skid controls with added trailer-sway control.
The optional performance brake package brings massive front Brembo 6-piston fixed aluminum calipers painted look-at-me Red with brake pads clamping on larger 16.1-inch Duralife rotors coupled with an 84 percent increase in brake pad area.
And the available Borla performance exhaust system makes a 28 percent improvement in exhaust flow with up to 10-hp boost at rear wheels.
Tahoe's base powertrain features GM's Active Fuel Management technology which cuts the number of cylinders by half when engaged in the combustion process when boosted power is not needed. The 5.3-liter V8 burning 87-octane gasoline develops 355 hp with 383 lb-ft of torque. It links to GM's 6L80 6-speed automatic and earns EPA fuel scores of 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway.
The Tahoe RST Performance Package installs Magnetic Ride Control with performance calibration plus Chevy's naturally-aspirated 6.2-liter V8 linked to the new 10L80 10-speed automatic transmission.
Chevy's 6.2-liter V8 features direct injection, Active Fuel Management, and continuously variable valve timing. It delivers 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, with Chevrolet citing in-house performance tests including a zero-to-60-mph time of 5.7-seconds.
The Magnetic Ride Control equipment functions as an active suspension system that measures pavement irregularities instantaneously and effects damping changes in the electronically controlled shock absorbers as quickly as every five milliseconds. As a result, the suspension delivers both improved body-motion control during cornering and a more comfortable ride while cruising.
Tahoe's passenger compartment is a quiet and comfortable space stocking three rows of seats to accommodate as many as nine passengers. There's a pair of bucket seats or optional 40/20/40 3-person bench on the front row, the second tier with fold-down 60/40-split 3-person bench or two captain's chairs plus the third bench with 50/50-split that also folds flat.
The cabin adds six USB ports and six power outlets (including a 110-volt 3-prong outlet), OnStar connectivity with 4G LTE and WiFi hotspot, keyless entry device with push-button starter, conversation mirror in the overhead console with panoramic view of rear seats, optional 8-inch color touchscreen radio with MyLink connectivity and available rear-seat entertainment system with twin screens plus Blu-ray DVD player.
